The public is invited to attend “An Evening of Agroecology and Agroforestry”, a free ZOOM seminar and conversation with Miguel A. Altieri, PhD and David Sansone on Indigenous People's Day, Monday, October 14, 4-7 pm (Hawaii Time). The event is sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, UH-Hilo Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center, and Marine & Environmental Research Institute of Pohnpei.

Dr. Altieri, Professor Emeritus of Agroecology at University of California, Berkeley will be teaching about Agroecology–a science, practice, and social movement that focuses on the application of ecological principles to agricultural practices to solve the sustainability and social inequality problems of agriculture.  He is known as “the Godfather of Agroecology” and is the author of many articles and books on the topic including Agroecology: The Science of Sustainable Agriculture.

David Sansone, the owner of Hawaii Edible Landscaping, LLC. has over 20 years of experience in agroforestry, and will share how agroforestry, the combination of agriculture and forestry practices and species, can help cultivators develop natural solutions to beat the weeds and pests, increase production, resist climate change, protect the water, and revitalize the soil.  He will offer a special focus on indigenous agroforestry since this is the origin of agroforestry.

The two will also have a wide ranging discussion about these topics, current challenges, and the future of sustainable agriculture.

Site Design

If you wanted to build your dream house; would you rather wing it, have a plan, or hire a master carpenter? Wouldn't you rather do it right the first time?

Agroecosystems are extremely complex, it takes years of on-the-ground experience to design functional and productive landscapes.

Agroforestry and permaculture design are powerful tools in efficient land planning and management.

We offer in-depth site and project assessments and documentation, site maps, planting maps, site adapted crop lists, phased garden development plans, and much, much more.

Landscape Installation

Our strategic installation method is based on 20+ years doing agroforestry research plantings to eliminate the weeds completely and fill in with groundcovers, flowers, native plants, and more.

We do phased installations designed to reduce labor and expenses down the road. Within weeks of planting, the land is transformed and full of life.

Landscape Maintenance

We offer professional landscape maintenance services including mowing, weed whacking, pruning, tree trimming, fertilization, natural pest control, and more.

Gallery

We have 20+ years of on-the-ground experience which empowers us to offer reliable solutions for the most challenging conditions.

Some of the sites we have revitalized include:  rubbish dumps, rock quarries, railroad grades, dirt roads, grassy parking lots, rocky ground, and old cane lands with extremely depleted and compacted soil.

This is what permaculture and agroforestry can look like in your yard, farm, or forest.   Notice what is missing from the pictures: weeds!
